As a business of Precision Engineered Products, Boston Endo-Surgical Technologies (BE-ST) has access to a depth of PEP engineering resources that allow us to take on unique medical device manufacturing opportunities.
We add value to these projects through design for manufacturability, manufacturing process optimization, and leveraging our proprietary expertise for shortening the development time to get your product to market faster.
A case in point is our recent experience helping a customer develop a new, single-use disposable surgical device intended to replace a stainless steel tool.
Our customer was reluctant to divert a large internal development team to this project; nor did they want to pursue the costly – and sometimes lengthy – path of engaging a medical design firm. So, the customer partnered with PEP.
- Based on the customer’s informal design concept we quickly developed a preliminary design for manufacturability.
- The customer asked for a rough, proof-of-concept prototype. We used our 3D printing capabilities to provide them with one -overnight.
- Since that time, a functional device has been produced, using components made of CNC machined polycarbonate to provide the necessary strength and rigidity.
- These prototypes have been evaluated by the participating surgeon, who has been very enthusiastic about the device.
Use of this new device is likely to result in a more efficient surgical protocol and reduce the cost (both initial and long-term) associated with performing these procedures: The new device will perform two interrelated procedures, something not possible with the stainless steel tool. This additional functionality will allow surgeons to better control bleeding, improving outcomes while lowering procedure overall costs. Cost avoidance related to sterilization and validation will also be realized.
There are still a number of steps ahead, including clinical trials, before this product may be ready for market. However, our customer was very pleased that their unique product could be developed into a functional device in just months.
